A N D   M O R E

Regina Rica is both a shrine and a pilgrimage site in Tanay, Rizal that focuses on the Catholic religion’s Queen of the Holy Rosary where a Station of the Cross can also be found. Rica is actually a Spanish term that refers to the lady that is revered at the 13.5 hectare property. Even non-Catholic faithfuls who are not intent to hear mass visit the tranquil place simply to take pleasure in being at the peaceful sanctuary. The area is interestingly accentuated by two remarkable hills that seem to symbolize the official logo of the property.

Tranquil Tanay

I recently visited Regina Rica as part of my Tanay, Rizal immersion which kicked off with a check-in at the province’s luxury resort called Momarco. Holding it as base for 3 days, I woke up as early as 5:30am to meet up with a hired tricycle driver that I chanced upon at the Tanay Public Market the day before. According to the driver, the property was donated by former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada to the followers of the holy movement.

The Third Kind

Technically, the first Regina Rosarii Shrine in the country can be found in Davao with the second one being at the Rosary hill in Tagaytay City. The one in Tanay is officially the third of its kind and its main feature, aside from the couple of prominent rolling hills is its erected 30-foot statue that’s on top of a roof deck of the motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Regina Rosarii. After a long period (choosing from at least 20) of intense research for a fitting property, Tanay came at such the right time for those who started it.

Natural Destination

A typical ritual at the site is one of singing of hymns at the hillside by the property’s followers. The area actually is rich with natural resources and is also a destination in itself having at least 3 waterfalls, a creek and a set of 10,000 trees.

In restrospect, I was able to witness a beautiful rainbow both in Momarco and Regina Rica. For several hours, the colorful display seemed unperturbed by the constant mountainside drizzle. Seeing its vibrance signalled the intense colors of nature in the area.

At the site, the Regina Rosarii Institute for Contemplation in Asia (RICA) can also be found which some Catholic faithfuls consider to be a venue for serenity, silence, and stillness. The facility is serving as a ministry for upholding spiritual healing, hope and hospitality to all those who seek them.

Holy Week Schedule

This Holy Week, the place will be busy with religious activities that will include a  Palm Sunday Mass on March 29, 2015 at 11:00am and 3:30pm, respectively. For March 30, 31 and April 1, an anticipated 9:30am Lenten Reflection will be facilitated by the Dominican Sisters of Regina Rosarii at the Chapel of the Women Mystics. By 11:00am, a Holy Mass will be conducted. For those seeking confession, it will be available at the side of the Main Chapel from 10:00am to 12:00pm and from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. For Holy Tuesday (April 2), the place is also open for a 4:00pm mass. As for Good Friday (April 3), a 6:00am Way of the Cross will be performed while the Seven Last Words at the Chapel of the Women Mystics will happen by 12:00pm.

How To Get There

For visitors coming from the South Super Highway, simply head to C5, then turn right at Ortigas Avenue before proceeding to Teresa. Take the Manila East Road to further head to the left road that leads to Tanay when in Morong, Rizal. In Tanay, you will see a Flying V gas station landmark to your right and a Shell gasoline station to your left. Once there, turn left at the Tanay-Sampaloc Road. When you reach Sampaloc, turn right to  Marcos Highway which goes straight ahead to Regina Rica. For additional landmarks, you will pass on your left side Camp Capinpin (where former President Erap was jailed) and to your right is the JE Camp, a known Estrada residential place by locals.
