I N T I M A T E

E S C A P E

You and Boracay. Unscripted. There's a chance that this can happen in Diniwid Beach where the powdery sand is bereft of tourism ennui. A good few minutes away of strolling from the busy shoreline of White Beach, this intimate portion of the island is a destination within a destination. Partially hidden from the edge of the high-end strip of hotel-resorts in Station 1, a set of establishments make up a cluster of distinctively old-island ambiance that lets a guest forget the past and future. The prevailing urge is to delight in the now and never.

Microtel By Wyndham-Boracay sits at the fringe of Diniwid Beach and a cliff, providing the feel of a tropical enclave within the island paradise. Equipped with international-standard accommodation amenities, this branch is just one in the chain of the hotel brand scattered across the Philippines. It carries the same topnotch quality of hospitable service in this side of the island from queen-sized beds with chiropractor-approved mattress to overflowing coffee at the lobby. It's also consistent with the other no-frills stay inclusions like complimentary breakfast, access to vending and ice machines, wireless internet, IDD and NDD phone, plus the usual safety deposit box.

Beach View Rooms

It has recently renovated its swimming pool which gives guests a spectacular view of the beach. The sought-after rooms are called Queen Double Room Beach View which are not only enhanced with beds that have high-quality linens (triple sheeting at that), down-like blanket, decorative top sheet and bed scarf, and high-quality pillows. They also offer guests fantastic views of the beachfront swimming pool and the stunning sunset at Diniwid Beach where sun rays are beautifully cast against the hotel facade every pleasant afternoon.

Make Mine Mediterranean

The hotel-resort interiors reminded me of Mediterranean-inspired villas that I've stayed in elsewhere. Definitely a departure from the usual countryside facade of the property, this branch's tropical island charm is unique to the Microtel brand but still carrying the same world-class quality as the other branches.

Pool Time

My most memorable moment of stay at Microtel By Wyndham-Boracay was lounging at the swimming pool area with friends. We had a blast doing underwater shots of ourselves as we waited for the perfect sunset that's famous in Boracay, especially in this shoreline of Diniwid Beach.

Mama's Fish House Treats

I also enjoyed feasting over tropical quality food at Mama's Fish House, the hotel-resort's F&B facility. I wouldn't trade my remarkable dinner there for any other experience at the island. Maybe it was the serene waters of the beach or the intimate ambiance. Whatever it was, it made my plate of seafood paella taste sublime along with my sampling of other Mama's Fish House favorites like the "Gg" Blue Mackarel and Bacon (infused with cherrytomato, feta cheese and herb salsa), the napolitana sauce-topped crumbed chicken breast fillet of the Chicken Parmigiana (served with hand cut chips and salad), and the wasabi mayonnaise-smeared pangko crusted tuna rolls called Tuna Seaweed Roll. I drowned everything with my order of kooky tropical drinks the way every island dinner is supposed to be had.

My companion and contributing photographer, a health buff, delighted over the authentic tomato-based seafood pasta called Linguine Ala Marinara. Swimming in spicy tomato sauce, feta cheese, kalamata (truly a Mediterranean olive) and basil, the dish was served with fresh fish, prawn mussels, clams and squid.

Mama's Fish House also serves great snacks like sandwiches, salads, and soups that kids can enjoy. I actually had a cheese sandwich for merienda before my pool dip since the restaurant was conveniently next to it.

Free Access To Island Shuttle

The strategic location of the hotel-resort at Diniwid Beach allows guests to conveniently hop in its free shuttle service to and from nearby attractions such as Puka Beach, the iconic Willy's Rock of Station 1, and the rest of White Beach. I happened to have tested this service when I had to buy supplies at the busy Station 2-based D'Mall where Microtel has a shuttle service leaving for the hotel-resort on a regular schedule.
