O R T I G AS

C E N T E R

N I G H T S P O T

I used to work for a company based in Ortigas Center along Emerald Avenue in Pasig City. The location is more than just a progressive center for various offices. It's also a hip and essential venue for dining out and nightlife. Office workers from the corporate streets and avenues of Ortigas would hie off to the distant Metrowalk to lounge the night away (in night shift employees' case, the morning away) at different restaurants, coffee shops and bars. I've experienced making the long walk from my office building's entrance just to reach a videoke, bar or restaurant at the district's amusement center.

This year, though, hardworking professionals who slave the daily grind can reward themselves with a memorable nightlife experience at the newly-opened and accessible Descanzo Bar & Resto. It's conveniently located at Garnet Road, so residents of Pasig City can easily get off an FX ride from the city proper exactly at the entrance of the establishment that was formerly known as Cafe A-go-go.

Descanzo means relaxation or break in Spanish and it's what one can have at the bar and restaurant that's owned by Marcus Lei Cases Ner, Don Alimbuyugen, Cesar Redolozo and Jay Resterio. Established last February of 2014, the new nightspot has so far become the emerging face of exciting Ortigas Center nightlife what with visits from celebrities such as KC Montero and Kell Gatdula of South Border.

I tested the bar's edible selection and tipsy drinks for TuristaTrails.com. I zeroed in on a pizza flavor, a sandwich treat, and a couple of booze numbers. My choice for pizza was the delectable Salami Sardines (P130++) which was served on a decent rectangular shape that's great for sharing with 2 or 3 other guests. I also ordered the popular Tuna Panini which was truly filling. Both went down well with sips of the intoxicating Blue Margarita and a bottle of Cerveza Negra.

Nightlife at the new chill out venue is not only relaxing. One can also engage with the other guests by jamming with the performing band. A chance at the mic can be had anytime just like what guests during my visit did. If you happen to have lyrics of your favorite songs on your mobile phone or any latest internet-ready gadget, you can use it as guide as you sing along to the accompaniment of the band.

Requests can also be made for performers to sing songs. Simply scribble song titles on a tissue paper and the waiters can submit it to the band for consideration. The band almost always has the trendy songs down to the last note, so your latest jam can easily be performed.

Those who leave their respective homes for Ortigas Center work can find it convenient to have breakfast at Descanzo Bar & Resto as early as 7:00am. It also serves lunch and dinner. The place can accommodate up to 110 customers. It has a VIP room that can be rented  for parties at an affordable and consumable rate. Leaving the place isn't difficult as well as a lot of taxi cabs ply the area especially in the wee hours.

Make Descanzo your next night out. Call your friends and celebrate the daily grind. There's always a reason to drown the day away at least once a week.

Getting There

If you're coming from Robinson's Equitable Tower (along ADB Avenue) that's next to Robinson's Galleria, simply walk towards the front of the building and you'll see Holiday Inn (still along ADB Avenue).

To the other side of ADB Avenue, opposite Robinson's Equitable Tower is Mega Plaza, situated at the corner of ADB Avenue and Garnet Road. The latter is where Descanzo is. Simply ply the road and you'll see Emerald Mansion to your right.
