Any Filipino who has been to Singapore knows that the family-owned restaurant called Boon Tong Kee (BTK) is a dining institution in the country. With outlets in Singapore's MacPherson Road, Whampoa West, River Valley Road, Cheong Chin Nam Road and East Coast Road since 1983, plus various eateries, it has become reflective of the way locals love to have their food.

The banner dish of Boon Tong Kee is the Signature Boiled Chicken which has delighted a lot of locals and tourists in that part of Southeast Asia, so much so that it managed to reach the Philippine shores two years ago. The Cantonese-style or Yue Cuisine-oriented boiled chicken is seriously juicy, succulent, and firm. This caused a few giant food industry players to request the restaurant owner, Thian Boon Hua, to bring it to Manila.

"Zi Char"

In the process of carefully entertaining franchise prospects, Mr. Hua recognized the traditional values that Filipino Mikee Rodriguez's family has. It seemed to the former that the Rodriguezes imbibed the same good intentions and legacy for "Zi Char" or home-style cooked food. With his mom's flair for interior design, the BTKs in Metro Manila has been dressed up with upscale dining sensibilities. According to the young Mikee, the Boiled Chicken is actually his dad's favorite BTK dish.

Dining one weekday lunch at the Rockwell Power Plant Mall branch of the restaurant, I found out for myself how preserved the flavors of the dishes were over servings of hefty appetizers like the Fried Eggplant with Pork Floss for fancy texture, the chilli pepper and curry leaf-topped Cream Cheese Chicken with pepper-infused cheese dip (served on a delightful-looking bun), and the Century Egg with sweet and sour sauce which I personally liked because it had bits of tangy-tasting pineapple. The delicious roster definitely stimulated my appetite for more food.

We were also served a set of steamer basket filled dim sum and the deceptively dull-looking Baked Pork Buns which demanded a taste to determine how good they actually were. Mikee even shared how they are touted by some of Boon Tong Kee patrons, especially his mom, to be better tasting than the usual Chinese pork buns. I must agree with the contention. It was quite tasty as it was freshly baked.

Heavyweights and Sweet Desserts

Soon, more heavyweights came. The intimidating Cereal Prawn was also served. I actually adored its sweet and spicy crispy coating. As for the Poached Chinese Spinach With Assorted Eggs and the stir-fried noodles, they were both filling.

Perhaps, the best dish served that day was the strong-tasting Beef Tenderloin with Roasted Garlic. It was lavishly swimming in flavorful Zhen Jiang Sauce.

For desserts, we indulged over servings of the vanilla ice cream-topped Malaysian favorite Sago Gula Melaka and the delectable Mango Mochi.

I sampled most of the dishes with Chicken Rice and drowned each turn with sips of the refreshing Barley-flavored drink.

Trained In The BTK Way

BTK's Head Chef Christian, like the other branches' head chefs were seriously trained in Singapore for three months to capture the quality of the family-owned enterprise. With my dining experience at the Makati City branch, I can attest to how the dishes are remarkably tender and slightly sweet in taste, signature qualities of BTK offerings.
